José Pedro Braga, OBE (1871 -1944)


Notable Achievements
  • 1880s: educated at St Joseph’s College
  • 1889 -1902: worked for his grandfather Delfino Noronha in his printing press in Hong Kong, Noronha and Co., a quasi-government printer.
  • 1902 - 1911: hired by Robert Hotung as managing editor of the Telegraph.
  • 1906 - 1931: became the Hong Kong correspondent for Reuters.
  • 1927: appointed to the Sanitary Board in Hong Kong.
  • 1929: became the first Portuguese member of the Legislative Council.
  • 1930s: was managing director of the Hong Kong Engineering and Construction Company. Braga Circuit in Kowloon is named after him.
  • 1934 & 1938: appointed Chairman of China Light and Power Company.
  • 1935: received an Order of the British Empire.
  • 1940s: spent his remaining years on a book titled The Portuguese in Hong Kong and China.

  • 1908 - 1913: educated at St Joseph’s College.
  • 1913: joined the Boy Scouts as soon as it commenced in Hong Kong in 1913
  • 1915: became the Scoutmaster.
  • 1922 – 1945: moved to Macau after World War II.
  • 1946: returned to Hong Kong where he established an import–export business, Braga & Co.
  • 1922 – 1968: collected and recorded the history of Macau; built up a large library and created a series of files and chronological lists of officials, missionaries and events; wrote numerous short historical articles, in both English and Portuguese, mainly for local newspapers; collected intensively from 1941 to 1945 the printed record of wartime Macau and Hong Kong; wrote several scholarly papers and compiled extensive bibliographies for the Hong Kong annual report.
  • 1966: The Braga Collection was purchased by the National Library of Australia from Braga.
